Major confiscations of Heosemys grandis in Asia

1998

On August 25th, 1998 a large shipment of animals was confiscated near Ninh Binh in Vietnam. H.grandis was the second most numerous species in the seizure.

2000

On March 15 2000, 9 Heosemys grandis were confiscated near Ninh Binh in Vietnam.

2001

In December 2001 thousands of turtles were confiscated in Hong Kong and taken to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden. The confiscation included 503 Heosemys grandis, of which 57 died at KFBG.
On January 17th 2002, 90 Heosemys grandis (and 916 turtles of other species) were transported to Rotterdam and distributed from there across Europe. Most of these have died since then. An ESB studbook, managed by Ivan Rehák, was set up for this group. Hatchlings have been reported from Prague Zoo, Fuengirola Zoo and Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna.
In four shipments between December 2001 and January 2002, 355 H.grandis were transported to the United States. 42 of these died in the next eight months. On the positive side, 37 hatchlings have been reported from this group.

2008

On November 27th, 2008 Ho Chi Minh's Environmental Police confiscated nearly 10,000 wild animals, including 517 Giant Asian pond turtles.

2010

On February 9th, 2010, an illegal shipment of 1320 turtles was confiscated in Hong Kong. This group included 9 Giant Asian pond turtles. Seven were donated to the European Studbook Foundation and shipped to Europe.
